Featured Community Organization: San Marcos Lions Club

The featured organization this month is the San Marcos Lions Club. Many people in San Marcos know that the Lions Club runs the Tube Rental and River Shuttle that are so popular for summer recreation on the San Marcos River. What many people don’t know is that these are fundraising projects; all the profits from these businesses (and other projects) allow the Lions Clubs to support dozens of charities providing educational opportunities for students and other valuable services within the local community. It’s surprising to find out that he San Marcos Lions Club tube rental originally began during the 1970’s out of a cattle truck with a portable air compressor and recycled automotive tubes. They would show up about 10:00 a.m. on the weekends and rent tubes out of a truck behind Peppers at the Falls (now Saltgrass Steak House). When the day was over, the tubes were stored in a member’s garage.   What started out as 20-40 tube rentals a day has grown to 800-850 rentals daily, making this program the single largest fundraising event by the San Marcos Area Lions Club. They now have a building in City Park and each year students from Bobcat Build and other volunteers work with the Lions Club to get the Tube Rental ready for business each summer.   The list of local organizations that have received money from the San Marcos Lions Club is quite lengthy and varied. They include the San Marcos River Foundation, Hays County Area Food Bank, Reading Is Fundamental, Hays Caldwell Women’s Shelter, Southside Community Center, CASA of Central Texas, San Marcos Youth Soccer, Habitat for Humanity, Sights and Sounds of Christmas, Greater San Marcos Youth Council, Brown Santa, and many, many more community groups and organizations. Be sure to stop by their booth and learn more about this invaluable community group. Learn more online at http://sanmarcoslionsclub.org.
