This month’s music kicks off at 1:00 p.m. with Joel McColl, who has lived in the Austin/Dripping Springs area for over 30 years. A veteran of the music scene, Joel cut his musical teeth in the coffee houses and folk venues of Oklahoma before hitting the road in the 1970’s. After several years of playing in stage shows and touring with a show band, he joined forces with Jim Tracey to form the power duo McColl & Tracey. Over the span of a decade, they released two albums and appeared with Bonnie Raitt, Hoyt Axton, David Bromberg, Kenny Rankin, Ian Matthews, Rusty Wier and many other notable musicians. After the duo went their separate ways, a 15-year stint with “midlife crisis” followed, and Joel left a trail of humor, satire, cynicism and jocularity in his wake. Joel became quite well-known for his humor, serving for 20 years as producer, emcee, and judge of the O Henry World Championship Pun-Off Contest, held annually in Austin. He was even named the 2006 International Punster of the Year. Joel McColl’s solo recording, The Return of Bosco Martin, was released in 2013, inspired by the efforts of a close friend as he battled cancer. It is a diverse collection of originals that range from funny to touching, rocking to melodic, with a little bit of quirk thrown in. Dedicated to all those who battle cancer, all sales of the CD benefit the Colon Cancer Alliance. You can hear the music of Joel McColl online at http://joelmccoll.com.
